Sujet, or couteaux-swiss , have motifs from the most diverse spheres of life and cycles. Known as swiss knives (couteaux suisse), they often had several blades and different tools.
In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, Sujets were still produced one at a time by artists carving each motif individually into ivory or bone handles, making them precious and accessible only to a small, affluent clientele. Motives of famous personalities, artists, politicians and, according to the romantic zeitgeist, motifs of rural life were in demand at that time. Obtained specimens are coveted collectibles.
This one, handled in brass has a sailor on one side and a clogged beautiful lady on the other.
Hand Made in France.
